Staking Plans
Staking plans are simply a term for the method used to determine
the amount of money to place on each bet. There are various schools
of thought about staking plans but here are some of my favorites.
The Rolling Bank Plan
You start with an initial bank of say £100. For each selection you bet a percentage of
the bank say 5% or 10%. Let's assume you opt for 10% or £10 and your first horse wins at
3/1. Your bank has now risen to £130.
For your next bet you stake 10% again. As your bank has risen to £130, 10% is now
£13.
Assume you loose this time. Your bank will fall to £117. For the third bet 10% of
£117 is £11.70. Rounding down to the nearest pound your stake will be £11.
Because you are always staking a percentage of your bank your bank will never disappear
even with a long loosing run.
The Fixed Rolling Bank Plan
This is a variation of the rolling bank plan. Again assume a starting bank of £100 and
10% = £10. This time you stake £10 on all selections until your bank grows by a certain
amount. For example when your bank reaches £200 you increase your stakes to £20.
Similarly if your bank falls to £50 you would decrease your stakes to £5 until it
reaches £100.
This plan is much simpler to use as it does not require any daily recalculation of
stakes. However the profit figures from the pure rolling bank plan will be slightly more
assuming you are betting at profit.
The Value Adjusted Plan
The idea here is to adjust your stakes according to the value you
are getting for the bet. For bets where you think the bookmaker
has seriously miscalculated the odds in your favor you would stake
more than you would do if there was only a slight advantage in your
favor.
This is probably the optimum plan to use however it requires the ability to accurately
and consistently pinpoint the degree of value in a bet. Certain tipsters build a degree of
this approach into their advice by suggesting a number of points to be placed on each
selection. Each point could represent a percentage of your bank. For example a 1 pt bet
could be 2% of your bank where as for a 5pt bet you would stake 10% of your bank.
