The layback technique is a powerful tool to increase your average betting odds and therefore increase the profitability of your betting. You could of course simply make your normal bet then lay lower in the hope of the market shifting over the course of the day.

There are however certain situations where this shift is more likely to happen. When you can spot these it is possible to overstake your first bet in the knowledge that more likely than not you can lay the excess off later. This leaves you your same standard stake on the horse but at the enhanced net odds.

Watch for example for one bookmaker lagging behind others in shortening a horse. If you can take his top price before he moves into line you will leave yourself a good opportunity to lay back at lower. Similar watch for horses trading on Betfair at less than bookies prices. Often this is a sign of an upcoming shortner.

I have found this technique particularly good when I know a lot of money will be going on a horse. How do I know when money will be going down, well quite simply certain betting services can bend the market either through respect from the bookies or through sheer weight of subscriber cash. The trick is to get on early at a good price then lay back later when the market has adjusted.
